Know more about Auto Mufflers!

A muffler is nothing but the exhaust pipe of a vehicle. Like any living organism it is essential for a vehicle to send out its waste for effective working.

The manufacturers usuallly place the mufflers where they find a lot of space in the car – Rightly guessed! The position of the muffler is behind the rear axle. This positioning increases the height of the passenger compartment.

In case of vehicles which have single exhaust system the mufflers are positioned directly to the tailpipe in a straight line such that it is placed just before the exhaust tip. In case of high performance vehicles which posses dual exhaust mufflers are places at both right and left sides directly to the tailpipe. Even in this case, it is placed such that the muffler is just before the exhaust tip. This type of mufflers having dual exhaust is also called corvettes.

In some vehicles the single exhaust pipe will lead back just passing the rear axle. Then it gets into a muffler that is positioned in a side to side position. From that point two tailpipes gets out from the muffler and runs through to the rear or outside of the vehicle behind the rear axle.

The mufflers come in different types. The first one is transverse mounted. These mufflers are placed in a side to side position. The other one is in-line mufflers. These are the common ones that we see all over.

Universal fit mufflers are manufactured such with notations regarding the size and quantity of the inlet and outlet pipes. Whereas in direct-fit mufflers that are specific for vehicles carry hangers from the factory locations.
