How to replace old Steering Rack Bushing: DIY Guide

Replacing the steering rack bushing can often turn out to be a daunting task. If you go to a mechanic or an automobile ship you may end up spending at least $50-60 for this simple task. So, for all the DIY lovers, here’s an easy procedure to get the job done free of cost (of course you need to spend $15-30 on buying a new set of steering rack bushing).

So, let us take a look at the necessary tools that you may require in this process. Firstly, you would require Jackstands, a pry bar, Socket wrench, breaker bar and a 17mm deep well socket as well as an extension. As far as the additional materials required in the process are concerned, you’ll only need the Steering rack bushing.
Having done the homework and arranged all the necessary stuff, it is now time to take a look at the step-wise procedure.

You can find the bolts from the bottom of the steering rack. Some of these may be within your reach directly, while the higher bolts can be removed with the help of the extension. Having taken care of the bolts, it is time to take off the clamp to find your way to the steering rack bushing.

The next step would be to move up the rack with the help of pry bar to about half an inch, and then it will be pretty easy to slide out the old bushing and put the new one in its place. Most of the folks usually feel that this would be the difficult part, but when you actually try to do this step you’d realize that the steering rack is very light.

That’s it, now it’s time to fix the new energy suspension bushings by rinsing and repeating the same procedure for the driver’s side!
