What’s the difference between manual and automatic throttle?

I’ve always driven automatic vehicles, and I’ve always stepped on the throttle like it was a hollow egg shell (in other words, I’m a careful driver).

I’m wondering, is the throttle in a manual car different? Do you step on the throttle a little harder the more you switch gears, or are both throttles the same?
