What is the best way to clean an intake manifold and throttle body?

I have removed my manifolds and found that the intake and throttle body are gunked up pretty badly. What is a good way to completely clean it and degrease it? The gunk is on the engine also, so how can I safely degrease the engine without getting crud in the chambers? What’s the best way to clean engine parts in general?
