How does an auto transmission’s hydraulic pump work?

I am converting an SUV to electric motor powered. When the transmission needs to shift I can cut the power to the motor, “disengaging” it from the transmission. Additionally, the motor doesn’t idle, so I have no way to keep hydraulic pressure in the transmission at a standstill. I want to remove the torque converter and power the hydraulic pump externally. Is this possible, or can I use an external pump?
