Sure it could be done, but the expense in doing so, would be greater than just buying the same model/make that already has the manual transmission.
Sure you can do anything you wish to do. Of course, ahem, it really depends on how much you are willing to spend to get what you desire. The biggest question I have is, why would you wish to change an automatic over to a standard (manual) transmission? Ok, all joking aside, sure you can, you’d have to change a whole lot of things and spend a whole lot of money. They are not interchangable. My advice? don’t bother
the costs are high at a dealership most garages can do it also and your not paying as much 600.00 for the change not counting transmission
yes it can be done, but Why?
is like changing the Harley for an scooter
you didn’t supply enough infomation like year, make, model, but
if the car is new enough to have onboard computers that are set up for an automatic, they will be fooling with the emmisions system and that is against the law. plus you would probley need a doner car(a car same year, motor, and a standard)to strip all of the needed parts, and this would probley be to expensive,
Most new car dealerships will not do this kind of a modification because of warranty issues. If you had a mechanic doe it, it would be prohibitively expensive. It would require a transmission, bell housing, clutch assembly, clutch master and slave cylinders, a different drive shaft, different pedal assembly, modifications to the interior console, etc. The labor itself could run to 20 hours at $95 an hour. You probably would be looking at a bill for five grand. The best bet is to find the model you want with an manual transmission already installed at the factory. It would sell for less than one with an automatic and be ready to go.
trade….
Unless you do it yourself, it’s not going to be worth what you pay to have it done. The labor is going to be at minimum $600 and the transmission and related parts (even used) are going to be at minimum $1000. Expect to pay a lot more. And like someone else said, most dealerships won’t do this kind of work. Many run of the mill mechanics won’t either. Your best bet would be some kind of speed/performance/custom job mechanic.
Even if you do it yourself, it may not be worth it. It’s much easier if the car came with either a manual or automatic and has console (rather than column) shift, but it’s still a lot of work.
It all depends on the car. Here is a link for converting a 1994-1997 V8 camaro or firebird from automatic to manual, look how many parts and how much work is involved! http://afrashteh.com/tranny_pics/T56.htm
That said, I’m doing mine with some help this weekend.
